In a landscape: Part one, fungi

Op 30 september komt er een nieuwe release uit voor mijn GPS: In a landscape van John Cage. Omdat deze muziek toch wat controverse uitlokt, maakte ik 4 kortere blogs die elk een stukje curiositeit rond de persoon van John Cage beschrijven.

Part one: Fungi

Als je iets van John Cage kan zeggen, is het wel dat hij de controverse opzocht. Ik moet eerlijk bekennen, dat ik zelf lang getwijfeld heb om deze ‘In a landscape’ op te nemen in mijn gps.De ene keer vond ik het boeiend en slorpte het me op, een andere keer versmachtte het me met banaliteit.

Ik hou er absoluut niet van de handleiding van een kunstenaar of kunstcriticus te moeten raadplegen om een kunstwerk te begrijpen. Het fascineert je of niet. Het spreekt aan, zet aan tot nadenken, inspireert, maakt nieuwsgierig. 

Ik kan alleen maar vaststellen dat dat voor mij het geval was met dit werk(en ander werk van Cage) al had ik wel de behoefte om de context waarin Cage schreef beter te leren begrijpen. 

Ik had immers onbewust mijn beeld over Cage laten bewolken door subjectieve meningen die zowel tijdens mijn opleiding als mijn professionele leven mijn pad kruisten; gaande van commercieel, charlatan, provocerend tot nooit gezien geniaal. 

Een reden om mijn blog over Cage, nav mijn opname van ‘In a landscape’, op te splitsen in enkele kortere deeltjes, gewijd aan die dingen die mijn aandacht trokken en me inspireerden.

Na alles wat ik nu over en van hem gelezen, beluisterd en aanschouwd heb, geeft hij mij het gevoel eerder een beeldend -muzikaal- kunstenaar te zijn dan louter componist. Niet zozeer omwille van het feit dat hij naast muziek ook schilderde, maar omdat hij alles wat met zijn muziek intervenieert, mee beschouwt als deel van de compositie. Het gaat hem dus niet louter om de uitvoering zelf maar wel om de volledige perceptie die je er als luisteraar aan kan koppelen.

Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat instituten zoals de ‘Guggenheim foundation’ en ‘The academy of Arts and letters’ hem lauwerden voor het verleggen van de grenzen van de muzikale kunst.

Naast schilderen, schreef hij ook poëzie, was na zijn middelbare school opleiding een tijd theologiestudent, studeerde uiteraard compositie en bleek een uitzonderlijke kennis(obsessie) over paddenstoelen te bezitten.

“Often I go in the woods thinking after all these years I ought finally to be bored with fungi, but coming upon just any mushroom in good condition, I lose my mind all over again.” 

In het boek ‘A mycological foray’ vind je een mooi overzicht van hoe belangrijk fungi in zijn leven waren en hoe ze zijn leven en dus ook zijn muziek beïnvloedden: foto’s van zijn geplukte schatten, een facsimile van zijn ‘Mushroom book’, anecdotes over hoe hij wel eens studenten per ongeluk vergiftigde en ook zelf op spoed belandde en de manier waarop hij liefst zijn fungi at: gebakken in boter (later olie want hij werd macrobioot)met peper en zout.

Cage had overduidelijk een naturalistische kant: in zijn composities maakte hij veelvuldig gebruik van het ‘toeval’ en om dit binnen zijn persoonlijkheid in evenwicht te brengen en te connecteren met feiten en realiteit, wijdde hij zich aan het foerageren en schaken, 2 bezigheden waar toeval niets in te zeggen heeft, beide zaken van leven of dood, winnen of verliezen.

Het lijkt erop dat het leven-en-dood potentieel van zijn mycologische bezigheden een nuttig contrast vormde met de extreme vrijheid die het avant-garde componeren bood.

On the 30th September, there will be a new release for my GPS: In a landscape by John Cage. Because this music provokes some controversy, I made 4 shorter parts that each describe a piece of curiosity concerning the person of John Cage.

Part one: Fungi

If there is one thing you can say about John Cage, it is that he sought out controversy. 

I must confess that I hesitated for a long time to include this ‘In a landscape’ in my GPS. 

At times I found it fascinating and absorbing, at others it choked me with banality.

I absolutely do not like having to consult an artist’s or art critic’s manual to understand a work of art. Either it touches you or it doesn’t. It speaks to you, makes you think, inspires you, makes you curious. 

I can only conclude that this was the case for me with this work (and others by Cage), although I did feel the need to better understand the context in which Cage wrote. 

After all, I had unconsciously allowed my image of Cage to be clouded by subjective opinions that crossed my path both during my education and my professional life; ranging from commercial, charlatan, provocative to never-seen-before genius. 

A reason to split my blog about Cage, following my recording of ‘In a landscape’, into a few shorter parts, dedicated to those things that caught my attention and inspired me.

After everything I have read about, listened to and seen of him, he makes me feel like a visual-musical artist rather than just a composer. Not so much because of the fact that, besides music, he also painted, but because he considers everything that interferes with his music as part of the composition. So he is not only concerned with the performance itself, but with the full perception that you, as a listener, can associate with it.

It is therefore not surprising that institutions such as the Guggenheim Foundation and the Academy of Arts and Letters have praised him for pushing the boundaries of musical art.

Besides painting, he also wrote poetry, was a student of theology for a while, studied composition of course and turned out to have an exceptional knowledge (obsession) about mushrooms.

In the book ‘A mycological foray’ you’ll find a nice overview of how important fungi were in his life and how they influenced his life and thus also his music: photos of his picked treasures, a facsimile of his ‘Mushroom book’, anecdotes about how he sometimes accidentally poisoned students and even ended up in an emergency room himself and the way he preferred to eat his fungi: fried in butter (later oil because he became a macrobiot) with pepper and salt.

Cage clearly had a naturalistic side: in his compositions he made frequent use of ‘coincidence’ and in order to balance this within his personality and connect it to facts and reality, he devoted himself to foraging and playing chess, two occupations in which coincidence has no say, both matters of life or death, winning or losing.

It seems that the life-and-death potential of his mycological pursuits provided a useful contrast to the extreme freedom offered by avant-garde composition.
