In a landscape: Part two, silence

Op 30 september komt er een nieuwe release uit voor mijn GPS: In a landscape van John Cage. Omdat deze muziek toch wat controverse uitlokt, maakte ik 4 kortere blogs die elk een stukje curiositeit rond de persoon van John Cage beschrijven.

Part two : Silence

In mijn vorige blogs schreef ik al wel eens hoe belangrijk stilte is voor een componist; de ruimte tussen de noten, heel precies aangegeven in de notatie, soms gevormd door uitstervende resonantie, soms met de vraag om alle vorige klank volledig te dempen. 

Stilte is een krachtige tool om de impact van het gehoorde te vergroten. Maar bestaat stilte eigenlijk wel?

4’33’’ stilte is wat John Cage zijn uitvoerder oplegt in het gelijknamige werk. De pianist zit voor de piano en behalve het pianodeksel openen en sluiten bij begin en einde van ieder deel, gebeurt er verder niets. 

Het omgevingsgeluid van een concertzaal is wat we negeren als we ons concentreren op een uitvoering. We zijn gefocust op de muziek en ergeren ons aan de ademhaling van een ander, aan gehoest, geschuifel en zo meer. 

‘They missed the point. There’s no such thing as silence. What they thought was silence, because they didn’t know how to listen, was full of accidental sounds. You could hear the wind stirring outside during the first movement. During the second, raindrops began pattering the roof, and during the third the people themselves made all kinds of interesting sounds as they talked or walked out.’

Rauschenberg’s White Paintings waren Cage’s inspiratie voor dit werk. Witte doeken, geschilderd met gewone muurverf elk bestaande uit een verschillend aantal modulaire panelen.

Hetzelfde gebeurt hier met kijken als bij Cage met luisteren. 

Rauschenberg moedigde aan dat als je gevoelig genoeg bent en aandachtig kijkt, je in de reflectie van de schilderijen kleine verschillen uit de omliggende ruimte kan opsporen, zoals met hoeveel mensen je in de ruimte bent, hoe laat het is of wat voor weer het is buiten.

Hoewel het voor begin jaren ’50 zeer experimentele statements waren die voor- en tegenstanders boeken deden volschrijven, vind ik het gegeven nog steeds bijzonder interessant. 

Als we even de lijn doortrekken: je zit in een concertzaal en focust op de uitvoering op het podium; de ambience rondom je, de opgewektheid die je deelt met je buur of juist dromerigheid, nervositeit, draagt deze niet bij tot de algemene ervaring, die de beleving van het concert nog intenser maakt? 

Hetzelfde in een museum. Als je drie keer op rij naar hetzelfde werk gaat kijken op verschillende tijdstippen, met veel of weinig volk rondom je, je gemoedstoestand in acht genomen, hoe verschillend is de perceptie van datzelfde kunstwerk dan niet?

En omgekeerd, diezelfde ambience uit de zaal, maakt het voor de musicus op het podium des te interessanter om te ageren. Zo een intermenselijke wisselwerking bij de beleving van kunst is toch iets dat niet nagemaakt kan worden? En dus deel van de kunst zelf?

In my previous blogs, I wrote about how important silence is for a composer; the space between the notes, very precisely indicated in the notation, sometimes formed by dying resonance, sometimes asking for all previous sound to be completely muted. 

Silence is a powerful tool to increase the impact of what is heard. But does silence really exist?

4’33” silence is what John Cage imposes on his performer in his work by the same name. The pianist sits in front of the piano and apart from opening and closing the piano lid at the beginning and end of each movement, nothing else happens. 

The ambient noise of a concert hall is what we ignore when we concentrate on a performance. We are focused on the music and are annoyed by someone else’s breathing, coughing, shuffling and so on.

Rauschenberg’s White Paintings were Cage’s inspiration for this work; white canvases, painted with ordinary wall paint, each consisting of a different number of modular panels.

The same happens here with looking as with listening to Cage’s work. 

Rauschenberg encouraged that if you are sensitive enough and look closely, you can detect small differences in the reflection of the paintings and in the surrounding space, such as how many people are present in the room, what time it is or what the weather is like outside.

Although these were very experimental statements in the early 1950s, which caused proponents and opponents to elaborate in critics, I still find the idea extremely interesting. 

If we take it a bit further: you are sitting in a concert hall and focus on the performance on stage; the ambience around you, the cheerfulness you share with your neighbour or, on the contrary, dreaminess, nervousness, does it not contribute to the overall experience, which makes the experience of the concert even more intense? 

The same in a museum. If you go and look at the same work of art three times in a row at different times, with many or few people around you, taking your state of mind into account, how different is the perception of that same work of art?

And vice versa, that same ambience from the audience, makes it all the more interesting for the musician on stage to act. Isn’t this interpersonal interaction in the experience of art something that cannot be imitated? And therefore part of art itself?
