In a landscape: Part three, I’ve got a secret

Op 30 september komt er een nieuwe release uit voor mijn GPS: In a landscape van John Cage. Omdat deze muziek toch wat controverse uitlokt, maakte ik 4 kortere blogs die elk een stukje curiositeit rond de persoon van John Cage beschrijven.

Part three: I’ve got a secret

Meeste mensen zullen Cage kennen van zijn werken waarin hij experimenteert met prepared piano(er wordt materiaal zoals papier, metaal, ea. gebruikt om tussen of op de snaren van de piano te plaatsen, zodat de piano een scala aan nieuwe klanken produceert)

Een tweede veelgemaakte associatie is zijn samenwerking met Merce Cunningham’s Dance Company, waar hij talrijke choreografieën van zijn levenspartner voorzag van muziek. (Merce Cunningham waarmee ook Ichiyanagi samenwerkte zie blog Ichiyanagi)

Zijn eerste composities zijn gebaseerd op de schematische organisatie van de 12 tonen van de chromatische toonladder. Hij houdt daarbij de herhaling van de noten in de verschillende stemlagen, zover mogelijk uit elkaar. 

In later werk, zullen zijn  reeksen en schema’s ritmischer worden, dit door het gebruik van de prepared piano(waarbij de toonhoogte immers vervaagde) en zijn liefde voor oosterse muziek. 

Door zijn verdere verdieping in de oosterse filosofie zal hij in zijn latere werk nog steeds beroep doen op patronen, alleen zal hij ze van het toeval laten afhangen. ‘I Tjing’ -het Chinese boek der veranderingen dat bestaat uit 64 wijsheden die van toepassing zijn op iedere situatie en gebaseerd op de gedachte dat alles steeds in verandering is- wordt daarbij zijn grootste inspiratiebron.

Zijn bedoeling: composities maken die vrij zijn van de algemeen gangbare regels der kunst van het muziek maken, maar die de individuele smaak, interpretatie, en filosofische achtergrond van de uitvoerder aanspreken.

Hij vond dat het niet aan de mens was om de wereld vorm te geven, maar wel om zichzelf aan te passen aan wat de wereld te bieden had. Ook bij muziek verlangde hij dat de uitvoerder zou zoeken naar wat hij mooi en betekenisvol vindt. Je hoeft de dingen niet zo zeer te proberen begrijpen, maar je wel bewust te zijn van hoe ze in elkaar zitten.

Cage was zeker één van de eersten die muziek en alle kunstvormen met elkaar combineerde. Hij hield ook van experimenten: liet pianisten water in potten gieten en onderwater fluiten, schreef noten waar er een imperfectie in het papier zat, stak groenten in een blender, versterkte deze in een grote ruimte en ga zo maar door.

De uitvoerder kreeg vaak heel veel eigen keuzes: het aantal pagina’s dat je wil spelen alsook de volgorde ervan werd niet bepaald, welke bezetting je wil gebruiken -van 1 solo instrument tot meerdere stemmen- het is allemaal mogelijk en in zijn overtuiging maakt het het werk meer tot kunst.

In 1960 verscheen Cage in het televisie programma ‘I’ve got a secret’ waar hij zijn compositie ‘Water walk’ brengt en demonstreert hoe hij zijn performances door het toeval laat bepalen. 

Ik wou dit fragment absoluut met jullie delen, het demonstreert heel goed waar Cage voor stond; zijn voortdurende waarneming van geluiden, zijn zoektocht naar stilte, de beperking die muzieknotatie gaf en zijn fantastisch gevoel voor humor!

On the 30th September, there will be a new release for my GPS: In a landscape by John Cage. Because this music provokes some controversy, I made 4 shorter parts that each describe a piece of curiosity concerning the person of John Cage.

Part three: I’ve got a secret

Most people will know Cage from his works in which he experiments with prepared piano(material such as paper, metal, ao. is used to be placed between or on the strings of the piano, so that the piano produces a range of new sounds).

A second common association is his collaboration with Merce Cunningham’s Dance Company, where he provided music for numerous choreographies by his life partner. (Merce Cunningham with whom Ichiyanagi also collaborated, check out blog Ichiyanagi)

His early compositions are based on the schematic organisation of the 12 tones of the chromatic scale. In doing so, he keeps the repetition of notes in the different voice layers, as far apart as possible. 

In later work, his sequences and diagrams will become more rhythmic, this due to the use of the prepared piano(where the pitch, after all, faded) and his love of oriental music. 

Because of his further immersion in Eastern philosophy, he will still appeal to patterns in his later work, however he will make them depend on chance. ‘I Ching’ -the Chinese book of changes consisting of 64 wisdoms applicable to any situation and based on the idea that everything is always changing- becomes his biggest inspiration in this regard.

His intention: to create compositions that are free from the generally accepted rules of the art of music-making, but that address the individual taste, interpretation, and philosophical background of the performer.

He believed that it was not up to man to shape the world, but rather to adapt himself to what the world had to offer. In music, too, he longed for the performer to search for what he finds beautiful and meaningful. You don’t have to try to understand things so much as be aware of how they are put together.

Cage was certainly one of the first to combine music and all art forms. He also loved to experiment: had pianists pour water into pots and whistle underwater, wrote notes where there was an imperfection in the paper, put vegetables in a blender, amplified them in a large room and so on.

The performer was often given a lot of his own choices: the number of pages you want to play as well as its order was not determined, what scoring you want to use -from 1 solo instrument to multiple voices- it’s all possible and in his belief it makes the work more of an art.

In 1960, Cage appeared in the television program ‘I’ve got a secret’ where he performs his composition ‘Water walk’ and demonstrates how he allows his performances to be determined by chance. 

I definitely wanted to share this excerpt with you, it demonstrates very well what Cage stood for; his constant perception of sounds, his search for silence, the limitation that musical notation gave and his great sense of humor!
