Sequences, the beautiful merge

Uit mijn lijst met werken voor mijn gps, moest ik kiezen in welke volgorde ik zou werken en opnemen; chronologisch?, volgens goesting?, voorkeur?

Hoe intensiever ik graaf in het repertoire hoe duidelijker het wordt dat dit repertoire onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden is.

Berio inspireerde zich op de triosonate van Debussy. Debussy die deze sonate (en ook zijn Danses) aanvankelijk voor chromatische harp schreef, voelde zich beperkt binnen de limieten van dit complexe en delicate instrument. Pas later, toen hij zijn sonate op pedaalharp hoorde, stelde hij de rijkdom van de harp vast.

Het is door Salzedo’s Modern Study of the harp, dat zowel componisten als harpisten uitgenodigd werden om de virtuositeit van de harp te ontdekken, zo ook Berio.

Iedere keer dat Berio een musicus ontmoette die zowel de totaliteit van het repertoire voor en de techniek van zijn instrument beheerste, schonk Berio hem/haar een werk, dat vaak uitmondde in een langere samenwerking. Het meest bekende voorbeeld hiervan is zijn samenwerking met zangeres en geliefde Cathy Berberian. 

Toen hij Francis Pierre ontmoette -die zich Salzedo’s virtuositeit en visie op de harp eigen had gemaakt en een visionaire kijk had op musiceren-, twijfelde Berio niet en schreef zijn 2de Sequenza voor hem.

Berio was gul voor ons repertoire: afgeleid van deze Sequenza voor harp schonk hij ons Chemins I voor harp en orkest. Berio schreef zo 8 Chemins, vaak gebaseerd op zijn Sequenze.

In het geval van deze voor harp werd het zaadje wel al eerder gepland: na het verschijnen van Circles(1960 stem, harp en 2 percussionisten), werd Berio gevraagd het repertoire voor Francis Pierre uit te breiden met een concerto voor het festival van  Donaueschingen, dit echter wel nog onder een andere titel. 

Het werd een concerto met een ongelofelijk mooie en transparante orkestratie: 2 harpen, piano, celesta en klavecimbel in het midden van het orkest voeren een prachtige dialoog met de solopartij. Uiteindelijk krijgt het toch de naam’ Chemins I based on Sequenza II’ en verscheen het in 1965. Uit de titel kunnen we afleiden dat Berio deze Chemins als een nieuwe aftakking, een nieuw avontuur beschouwt, waar tegelijk heel wat lineariteit in terug te vinden valt.

Within my gps list, I had to decide in which order I would record the chosen repertoire.

Working so intensively with this repertoire it becomes more and more clear that everything is even more connected to each other then we often assume. 

Berio found his inspiration in the Sonate en trio by Debussy, the latter feeling restricted by the limitations of the chromatic harp, for which this piece(and also his Danses) were originally written. Only later on, when he heard his pieces on pedal harp, he was convinced about the richness of this plucked instrument.

It was Salzedo’s Modern Study of the harp that invited many composers -including Berio- and harpists to discover the virtuosic possibilities of the harp.

Whenever Berio encountered a musician mastering the repertoire as well as the skills, Berio provided a work for him/her, which often resulted in a long term collaboration; the most known example being his musical and romantic relationship with Cathy Berberian.

This was also what happened when he met Francis Pierre: Berio doubted not for a moment to write his 2nd Sequenza for this passionate and exceptional harpist, who had a visionary view on music making.

Derived from this Sequenza there is another incredible piece from Berio in our repertoire, ie Chemins I for harp and orchestra. Berio wrote 8 Chemins, often based on Sequenze.

In the event of the harp concerto it was already intended a little while before the Sequenza. After the  creation of Circles(1960, voice, harp and 2 percussionists), Berio was asked to expand the repertoire of Francis Pierre with a harp concerto for the festival of Donaueschingen, but here another titel was still in mind.

It became a masterpiece with a very transparant orchestration: 2 harps, piano, celesta and harpsichord centered in the orchestra dialogue with the soloist. After all it is titled ‘Chemins I based on Sequenza II’ and appears in 1965. From this title we can assume that Berio saw this as a branch-off which at the same time shows a lot of linearity with it’s mother Sequenza.
