The music according to Luciano

In mijn blog over de Suite van Britten, schreef ik hoe belangrijk dit werk was voor de heridentificering van het harp repertoire. Het zoeken naar en gebruiken van nieuwe technische en akoestische mogelijkheden, werkte enorm inspirerend voor uitvoerders en componisten. 

Wat echter extreem duidelijk wordt in dit verhaal is dat de context waarin een compositie tot stand komt -gaande van geografisch, maar zeker ook sociaal en ideologisch- onlosmakelijk verbonden is met het resultaat.

Reeds 6 jaar voor de Suite van Britten -in 1963- schreef Berio zijn Sequenza II voor harp!

Vraag aan enkele liefhebbers om na het beluisteren van Britten en Berio deze op een tijdslijn te plaatsen en hoogstwaarschijnlijk zullen ze Berio na Britten noteren.

Dat is uiteraard niet verwonderlijk, aangezien Berio in het herontdekken van de harp nog veel meer extremen opzoekt, maar vooral vanuit een compleet ander idioom schrijft.

Berio wil met zijn Sequenze een soort van polyfonische luisterervaring ontlokken, maar dan eerder in een metaforische betekenis: hij plaatst instrumentale karakteristieken zodanig tegenover elkaar, dat men verplicht wordt om de technische aspecten van het instrument in de diepte uit te spitten, zodat er een soort gesprek ontstaat tussen de uitvoerder en zijn instrument, een theater van klank en bewegingen.

Hij had het niet zo voor de virtuoos die zonder enige connectie met zijn instrument of inzicht in historische context, muziek interpreteerde met als belangrijkste doel het tonen van zijn kunnen.

Berio vraagt van zijn uitvoerders dat ze zowel technisch als intellectueel op het hoogste niveau musiceren. Hij hoopt op een uitvoerder die traditie met de wensen van de hedendaagse componist weet te vereenzelvigen en zodoende onderzoek verricht naar de mogelijke evolutie en overlevering van zijn instrument in de toekomst.

Zo komen we eigenlijk vanzelf bij de vraag die ik me voortdurend stel(denk aan mijn bezorgdheid over dempen en pedaalgebruik): is er nood aan verdere ontwikkeling van instrumenten en de harp in het bijzonder? Is het niet zo dat een instrument zijn karakteristieken heeft en dat je daar per definite niets kan en hoeft aan te veranderen en dat de evolutie alleen bestaat in het gebruik van je instrument en het zoeken naar een nieuwe grammatica (samen met de componist)?

Hoewel er soms geopperd wordt dat Berio in tegenstelling tot de ‘loosely robed girls’ uit zijn quote hierboven, hier een eerder agressieve compositie schreef, zie ik daar toch een nuance.

Berio wist hoe hij kon schrijven voor dit delicate instrument, hij werkte vooral samen met de harp: hij speelt bv. met het voortdurend altereren van pedalen, waardoor je de harmonie hoort veranderen in de resonantie, iets wat we in ander werk juist proberen te vermijden. (iets wat componisten vandaag ook nog gretig gebruiken, denk aan Hosokawa)

Hij duwt je zeker in het uitzoeken van de grenzen van je instrument en van jezelf. Dit werk is voor mij een emotionele confrontatie met mijn harp. Hoeveel uren, dagen, jaren spenderen we niet met ons instrument? Vele collega musici zullen het met me eens zijn dat je het nooit door en door kent, dat er steeds iets nieuws te ontdekken valt. Dit is juist de kracht van het musiceren, maar daar gaat extreem veel emotie mee gepaard, van zachte liefde tot verhitte discussies.

*Elke Sequenza wordt voorafgegaan door een vers, geschreven door de Italiaanse auteur Edoardo Sanguinetti, met wie Berio frequent samenwerkte. Ieder vers kan -indien gewenst- voor de uitvoering voorgedragen worden aan het publiek. De dichter schonk de verzen aan zijn vriend Berio begeleid van volgende woorden:

‘Incipit sequentia sequentarium, quae est musica musicarum secundum lucianum’

In my blog about Britten’s Suite for harp, I mentioned how important this work proved to be for the harp repertoire. Britten’s search and use of new techniques and acoustic possibilities, inspired many performers and composers.

It shows also how the contextual background in which a composition is created -geographical but also socially and ideologically- is inseparably linked to the result.

Berio wrote his Sequenza II for harp 6 years previous to Britten’s Suite!

If you would ask some enthousiasts after listening to these works to put them on a time line, they will most understandably put Berio after Britten, given that Berio explores even more the extreme limits of the harp and most importantly writes with a complete different style idiom.

With his Sequenze, Berio wants to evoke a kind of polyphonic listening experience, but in a metaphorical sense: putting instrumental features opposite each other, there is no other way then immersing yourself into the technical aspects of the instrument, allowing a conversation to emerge between the performer and his instrument, a play of sound and movement.

He wasn’t fond of the virtuoso executing scores with the sole purpose of showing his skills without any connection with his instrument or understanding of the historical context.

Berio dares to ask to perform at the utmost highest technical and intellectual level. He seeks performers who are capable of combining tradition with the desires of the contemporary composer and as such carry out research on possibilities in progression and survival of their instrument into the future.

That brings me to the question I pose myself continuously(remember my concerns about damping and use of pedals): is there need for further development of instruments and harp in particular?

Isn’t it true that an instrument has its characteristics and that they needn’t be changed? Is the only possible progress not to be found in the use of our instrument and in the development of new grammar?

It has been said that Berio wrote -in opposition of his ‘loosely robed girls’ from above- a rather aggressive composition with his Sequenza for harp, but I would like to add some subtlety.

Berio knew very well how to write for this delicate instrument and mainly works with the harp: f.e. he uses a lot of pedal shifting, causing hearable change of harmony in the resonance of the harp, a feature that we rather try to avoid in other repertoire. (even today a technique eagerly used by composers, Hosokawa f.e.)

Considering that we spend hours, days and years with our instrument, we still have to admit that we never achieve to know it through and through, there is always something new to discover and although this is the power of music making, it involves tons of emotion ranging between utter love and heated discussions.

*Every Sequenza is proceeded by a verse, written by the Italian author Edoardo Sanguinetti, with whom Berio often worked together. Every verse can be recited before performing the Sequenza. Offering this poetry to Berio, Sanguinetti added the following words:
